Calista Bloom never wanted to fight in the war and it has been five years since war waged over Kosmotopia. All because of a sword. Fair enough, the Astronblade is supposed to hold infinite power, that is, once it finds its one true owner. But every 18-year-old will need to join the military and Calista soon finds herself trying to awaken the Astronblade. Will this batch hold the Blade Bearer? Or will finding the Blade Bearer trigger the chain of events that will bring about the end of the world?
I have a new theory - drawn covers usually mean the book is going to be awesome. Hear me out, we have the Le Fay series by Realm Lovejoy and the Air Awakens series by Elise Kova and they have both been amazing. I will confess and say that I picked up this book for the sole reason of the cover alone. Sure the summary definitely caught my interest but it was all because of the cover.

The story follows Calista Bloom, an orphan who is drafted into the army because her country is at war. The only thing to end the long war is for the Blade Bearer to waken the Astronblade. Right from the beginning, Calista proves that she is a fighter and she's not afraid to beat other people, especially if they run at her with an umbrella. She cares for nobody but her twin brother and the two are practically mirrors of each other. The relationship between Calista and her brother is so genuine and beautiful, it's comforting almost to see that an orphan still has some sort of family.

The whole military system is so skewed and there's so much political backstabbing going around. This book leaned a bit too military at times and shows just how brutal war politics can be. The Blade Bearer is not considered a savior who can end the war and saves countless lives to those in charge, but rather the Bearer is a weapon and whichever side awakens the Astronblade first will be the victor.

This book dragged a bit for me in the middle but the prologue kept me going. I needed to see how things worked out and my heart is still weeping because of certain events. I feel like certain parts of the book need to be reread before I can full comprehend what happened, but I need some time to heal before I can do that.
